U.S., Australia, New Zealand tour
-and-
Articles and reviews

June 29, 2001

Glenn now has lots of tour dates lined up for the U.S., Australia, and New Zealand! More North American tour dates may still be added, so keep an eye on the Quixotic site for the latest news. All currently confirmed gigs are listed on the main page, just scroll down a bit.

Glenn's solo album, The Incomplete Glenn Tilbrook, will be available in the U.S. starting August 28th. However, the U.S. release will not include the bonus CD; it will have some extra tracks instead. If you want the bonus CD, you should order from Quixotic. They really do ship quickly, and if you don't have a credit card just send them a check. They do NOT charge extra for overseas shipping - the price on the site is what you pay regardless of where you live.

There is a good Tilbrook article at Keep it Live where Glenn discusses the new album and style of pub gigs (you have to scroll down a bit to get past the bio). icLiverpool.com has another short article with quotes and a review of his recent show at the Lomax! There are also some good reviews of the new album in the Glenn Tilbrook section at Quixotic. Just click on "reviews" at the top of the page.

For a real blast from the past you can visit this German site, Rockpalast, which has some vidcaps of Squeeze from the mid-eighties (click on "16 rocknacht" from the sidebar and then scroll down a bit). I have heard Glenn's hair described as "big" before, but I have only seen it long. THIS is big hair!

Glenn at The Fleadh
-and-
Liverpool Pics

June 18, 2001

Glenn was all over the London Fleadh Festival on Saturday, and got plenty of Radio 2 coverage. He played a 45 minute set onstage with The Party, and two of those songs went out over the airwaves: 'Hourglass', and 'Interviewing Randy Newman'. Richard Allinson took him aside and interviewed him, and Janice Long brought his name up whenever possible - namely while interviewing Aimee Mann and comedian Phil Jupitus. You can listen to the Allinson interview here.

Thanks to Maggie and Helen, there are also new pics up from the recent Liverpool gig!

Now the question is, is there anyone in Ireland with a camera and a generous spirit? (Generous enough to send me pictures, that is.) I hope someone will let me know how his hair is getting along.

Glenn in Ireland!
June 16, 2001

Irish fans will be pleased to know that Glenn is finally going to be playing some gigs in Ireland and Northern Ireland! He has four acoustic dates this week:

Monday - Belfast
Tuesday - Dublin
Thursday - Limerick
Saturday - Waterford

After that it's back to London for some festivals where The Party will join him onstage again. He plans to follow those up with a solo acoustic tour in the U.S. and Australia, but those dates aren't set yet. For all tour dates (current and future!) please visit the Quixotic site and the Official Glenn Tilbrook site.

Some people have been wondering what G.S.O.H. means. It's an abbreviation for "good sense of humour", and the phrase "G.S.O.H. essential" is often used in personal ads or ads for roommates, etc.

Andy Peebles interview
-and-
Party pics!

June 8, 2001

This interview with Andy Peebles is one of those good ones where Glenn gets to talk a lot! It's also longish, so topics are discussed at a leisurely pace rather than racing dizzyingly from subject to subject. No phone calls, no songs ('Interviewing Randy Newman' was there originally), just 22 minutes of intelligent chat. Special thanks to John, Maggie, and Patrick for getting it here.

While Glenn and The Party were busy touring, you guys were obviously busy taking pictures! There are new pics up from Glasgow and Bristol, thanks to Liz, Paula, and Annie.

Many people have gleefully reported running across The Incomplete Glenn Tilbrook in HMV's "recommended release" section. Go HMV!

London Today
-and-
London Live Radio

June 3, 2001

Two new interviews are here in RealMedia, thanks to Gill and Sarah. The first is conducted by Robert Elms on London Live Radio, and the second is from the TV show London Today, but is only available in audio. The sound quality of the London Live interview is compromised by the fact that Sarah had to smuggle a tape recorder in to work and secrete it under a colleague's desk, where reception was poor. However, the interview quality is high, and I think you will enjoy it. The London Today spot is short but sweet. He played 'This Is Where You Ain't' at the end, and did I have the heart to cut it out? No, I did not. I have no willpower at all when it comes to that song.

I asked U.K. people to let me know where they spotted Glenn's album in real (non-virtual) shops, and the response has been overwhelmingly positive! It seems to be abundantly available. If you have a choice, go to Andy's Records, where Helen reports discovering it displayed in the chart section. Andy is obviously a visionary and a forward thinker.

Uncut magazine features Glenn again this month! They have a short review of The Incomplete Glenn Tilbrook, and a one-page interview. He also helped to choose the top 50 Beatles songs listed, and some of his comments are included. Uncut is sometimes available outside the U.K. at large bookstores such as Borders, but make sure you get the right issue! It is the Beatles 50th Anniversary one (July).

Album Release!
-and-
Sunday Breakfast Tips

May 27, 2001

Glenn's solo album is finally, finally out! It's available in shops in the U.K. like HMV, and I suspect it may also be at Townsend Records, since they carry it at their online store. It is a FANTASTIC album, and comes with a bonus CD of nine acoustic tracks! For people outside of the U.K. it is still an import, but will be released in the U.S. eventually. The last estimate I heard was August, so if you want it soon you should order it from Quixotic Records or another online U.K. store.

Fashionably late; worth the wait

Remember how excited I got about the single This Is Where You Ain't? Well, in my rapture I neglected to mention the B-sides: a dance version of the song (excellent!), and a track called 'Sunday Breakfast Treat'. In addition to being a very catchy song, 'Sunday Breakfast Treat' is a recipe for Welsh Rarebit. Well, it was only a matter of time before the inevitable transpired; listeners tried the recipe out. One fan reports:

Maybe my cheddar and mustard weren't strong enough, maybe I used too much stale beer, but it didn't look how I'd envisaged. I ate it anyway, in the name of a good cause.

To avoid further culinary disasters, I decided to look at some alternate recipes to see if I could find the flaw, particularly since Glenn mentioned that he might have left out a vital ingredient ("perhaps an egg", he mused). I believe I am now as much of an expert on Welsh Rarebit as it is possible to be without actually venturing into the kitchen myself. You can review my findings at the Welsh Rarebit help page.

If you missed the Janice Long interview and can't download the RealMedia file, you can now read it in text. Special thanks to Mark Foot for transcribing it and allowing me to use it here!

Tour reports
May 20, 2001

Fan reviews keep flooding in to the Squeezefan mailing list, the Squeezenet site, and my mailbox. The ones that I get in my personal mail are very entertaining, if thoroughly unprintable. However, Liz McAuslan said of last night's gig in Glasgow:

The new tunes sound fab, the new band were fab. Glenn was having the time of his life and the band were indeed a party! They were jumping about like mad.

If you need photographic documentation, Philippa has sent in some really gorgeous pics from the Wolverhampton gig the night before that. Glenn does indeed seem to be having a really good time. He is also modeling his new haircut, and that pajama top I like so much. Apparently he was wearing carpet slippers to match! (Glenn denies they are slippers.)

Janice Long Show
May 19, 2001

Glenn and The Party took a detour late Thursday night to play a few songs on Janice Long's Radio 2 show. She interviewed Glenn, who talked about touring with a band as opposed to alone, and answered some email questions from fans. The interview is here now, but I cut out most of the songs. If you missed the show when it aired, you will only get to hear Glenn laugh his way through "Take Me I'm Yours", speechless with mirth because the drummer had completely disrobed while his back was turned! He misses at least one whole line in the song, and plenty of words here and there. He just about pulls himself together for the final verse.

A Glenn interview with Andy Peebles aired yesterday on a lot of local BBC Radio stations, but none of them are netcast, so I missed it. My friend Alan was able to tune in, and he did his best to keep me abreast of the situation via Instant Messenger: "Now he's talking…now he's singing." His efforts were much appreciated, but I can't help feeling like something was lost in the translation! If anyone managed to tape that one, I would love to hear from you.

A Few of Glenn's Favorite Things
May 16, 2001

Adam De Ville kindly sent me this newspaper clipping detailing some of the things Mr. Tilbrook never travels without. I am particularly thrilled about it, because Adam, Glenn, and The Guardian have unwittingly conspired to put me out of the torment of not knowing what kind of Mac (computer) Glenn uses!

Don't forget to watch Glenn on A Question of Pop this Saturday!

GT & The Party tour launches!
-and-
Janice Long Interview

May 14, 2001

Glenn played his first gig with The Party last night! You can read a review and setlist at Squeezenet.co.uk. They did several songs from the new album that haven't been played live before. The album itself was not available at the gig, but will be sold at all the shows starting May 18th.

Janice Long's Radio 2 show will feature Glenn and the Party as guests this week. It runs from midnight to 3 a.m., and the band is scheduled for Thursday night/ Friday morning. This may not be a great listening time for many U.K. people, but it is excellent for people in the U.S. and Canada! Might work for Aussies too. Check for your local time at the World Clock site. (You put in the time it airs in London - remember it's technically Friday the 18th! - and then it will show you the times around the world.)

There is nothing else new here, but you can read the same old news with a new, faux-Cockney twist if you go to the Dialectizer and just press the "dialectize!" button. My sister claims to have read the entire bio a la Cockney! Also, I like to read the guestbook in fake biblical text, as so many people encourage me to "Keep unto the righteous tarry!"

To escape from either of these altered versions of the web, just close the window.

There has been a lot of exciting news announced recently at the Quixotic site, so if you haven't been there for a while, go take a look!

New pics!
May 7, 2001

The delightful Helen of Powys has sent me some nice Glenn pics from the Holmfirth Picturedome gig! Also, Adam DeVille has some great pics up at his web site from Friday's Borders Bookstore mini-gig in London.

The new issue of Uncut Magazine has a free CD in it containing Glenn's new song "We Went Thataway". The track will also be on his upcoming LP, but this is a sneak preview. It is one of the entirely self-penned variety, and is described in the magazine as "McCartneyesque". You can buy a copy of this month's Uncut at britishmagazines.com, who ship worldwide. (Or at the shops, of course, if you're British!)

I have finally updated the Audio and Video section, so everything that's here is now there too! But I'm sure I will always be slow at updating that section since I want to get things out to you as soon as possible. You should always check here (News page) first.

Airplay
May 3, 2001

Do you wish to experience the thrill of hearing Glenn's new songs on the radio more often? Me too. Let's make sure the DJs know we're interested! Click on the links below to send Radio 2 a request for your favorite single.

Ken Bruce ken.bruce@bbc.co.uk
Jonathan Ross jonathan.ross@bbc.co.uk
Janice Long janice.long@bbc.co.uk
Terry Wogan wogan@bbc.co.uk
Alex Lester alex.lester@bbc.co.uk

Virgin Radio might also play the songs. You can write to them at studio@virginradio.co.uk, or call them on the phone. From the U.S. you dial 011 and then the rest of the "International Hotline" number.

National Studio: 0500 30 1215
London Studio: 0500 30 1058
International Hotline: +44 20 7434 3232

There is also a song request form at the Virgin web site. It asks you for embarrassing stories about your coworkers that the DJs can tell on the air while playing your song of choice. (So be sure to come up with something really good.)

People from outside the U.K. can try calling up your local radio stations and requesting the songs. DJs who are known Squeeze fans are, of course, more likely to have the singles.

Let us know how it goes! No matter what method you choose, be sure to report back to me or the Squeezefan mailing list so we can share in your glorious victory or agonising defeat.

Radio 2 interview with Alex Lester
April 27, 2001

Remember that Radio 2 interview you missed a few weeks ago? Or only caught the second half of? Well, it is available now for download (1.2 MB), compliments of Gill, who got ALMOST the whole thing on tape. It's a great interview - Glenn and Alex are just chillin' and chattin'. Glenn gets to talk a lot about music stuff, and tells us a scary story about how Squeeze narrowly missed becoming the next Bay City Rollers.

Shameful Confession (for new or infrequent visitors): The Audio and Video section is badly in need of updating, so if you are looking for something that aired after mid-January, you will only find it by scrolling down through this page. There are six such items, counting today's radio interview!

Half Redemption: I did update the Solo Album page today (which I considered to be more pressing), so if you haven't been keeping up on that front you can now get all the info you need in a nutshell.

This is what you want!
April 22, 2001

The real deal.

Glenn's new single, This is Where You Ain't, will be released tomorrow (April 23)!

You know, I get so busy with this site that sometimes I forget IT'S ALL ABOUT THE MUSIC. Hearing this single was like a jolt back to reality for me. This is Glenn at his best - he has taken this lovely, simple song and filled it out, enhancing and supporting the beautiful lyric that could easily have lost its bounce in less capable hands. If you've heard it acoustically, I can tell you he has infused it with a totally fresh sound, and breathed so much life into it that it could just get up and dance on its own. It's lively, it's introspective, it's something you can NOT hear without moving, and at the end it's a little heartbreaking. But most of all it is everything you love about Glenn Tilbrook: gorgeous voice, infectious fun, lyrics that hit you where you live, and all of it delivered straight from the heart. Buy this single; you will not regret it!

Quixotic Records
Townsend Records
Amazon.co.uk

The above stores will all deliver worldwide, but Quixotic will give you the best price!

After you have ordered the CD, you may come back here and listen to that Radio 2 interview Glenn had on Saturday. It was hosted by Mark Lamarr, who normally hosts Never Mind the Buzzcocks. He evaluates Glenn's arse, tells a lot of fart jokes, and goes all gooey over Glenn's voice innumerable times. I dunno, Mark. You're starting to sound like me.

New fan photos
-and-
Five Live interview

April 19, 2001

Philippa sent in some really nice fan photos from the Northampton gig of April tenth. I am still wrestling with the problem of how best to display pics here, so any suggestions or comments are welcome.

Glenn was on Five Live yesterday (British radio station that for some reason does not conform to the usual Radio 1, Radio 2, etc., naming pattern), and was interviewed for about 20 minutes by Fiona Glover. If you missed it, you can download it here (direct download, 3 MB). Prompted by Fiona, he talked a bit about that picture of him as a 14 year old featured in the "Early Years" section of the bio. I always thought that was a flowered shirt he was wearing! Apparently it is tie-dyed. Glenn also named the members of his new band, putting us on a first-name basis with all of them. (Necessarily, since he didn't give their last names.)

Another radio interview is coming up this Saturday, April 21, on Radio 2. It's in Jonathan Ross's time slot, but will be hosted by Mark Lamarr instead. You can listen through the Radio 2 site if you're outside the U.K. (and awake). The Quixotic site estimates he will be on between 12:30 and 1:30 pm, but that's not carved in stone. Check the World Clock site for your local time.

VERY unofficial video
-and-
Ancient Squeeze vidcaps

April 13, 2001

Are you missing out on Glenn's tour? Well, now you can watch Glenn sing 'Suspicious Minds' from the roof of his car in RealMedia video. Mind you, the picture quality is not very good because it's from a camcorder, and the audience is sometimes louder than Glenn, but it is really lively and a lot of fun! Special thanks to Paul Hodges for the video, and to Roger for making it into RealMedia for us.

For those of you who can't watch video on your computer, I offer these really cute vidcaps from a very early Squeeze appearance on Top of the Pops 2. They were doing 'Up the Junction' live. Glenn saw this video himself not too long ago and commented, "I don't remember that T-shirt. I don't remember it at all. However, looking at it, I do remember what I was thinking when I was doing it. I thought that there was a need for me to do something when the camera was on me. I was a bit limited because I was playing guitar and singing, so I hit upon the fantastic idea of emoting with my eyebrows. It turned out not to be such a great idea." (Actually, this is more evident in the video, but I've had that up here for a long time.)

For still more virtual concert-going experience, visit the Squeezenet.co.uk site, where there are tons of new reviews from the current tour! Or delve into the wealth of fan reviews from past tours (including the one with Glenn on the car) at the Squeezefan site.

Glenn on tour
-and-
Buzzcocks clips and vidcaps

April 4, 2001

Glenn's U.K. tour started this week! He will be on the road throughout April and May. If you want to check the tour dates, the best place to look is the Quixotic site's main page. You need to scroll down through the news until you find them, but they are all there and up to date. They're in two clumps: the April dates and the May dates. They're separate because they were announced at different times. (Also, April is solo acoustic, and May is with the full band.)

Meanwhile, Dave at the Squeezenet site has decided to start a brand new section for tour reviews, so if you write one you can send it to him. Gig reports have already been pouring into the Squeezefan list, and it sounds like Glenn is in his usual excellent form. There is also a rumour that his hair has reached "optimum length". I hope to have photographic documentation up here later, but I am relying on you to send me some!

In an effort to keep up the spirits of those who do not get to see him in person, Roger has once again come through with great vidcaps and video clips! This time they are from his recent appearance on Never Mind the Buzzcocks. I could not put up the whole show - it's way too long! But Roger picked out the parts that feature Glenn the most and made them available for download in three sections of manageable size.

Our hero shrewdly plots his team's Buzzcocks victory. (Shirt: full stars. Hair: rapidly nearing optimum length)
