A song for the rest of us

September 24, 2001

…Karin! The CD will go out to you this week. Thanks very much to everyone who entered; I really enjoyed getting your email from around the world!

But there are no losers at The Unofficial Glenn Site. I paid attention today when the following Dalai Lama quote appeared in my inbox:

A central teaching in most spiritual traditions is: What you wish to experience, provide for another. Look to see, now, what it is you wish to experience - in your own life, and in the world. Then see if there is another for whom you may be the source of that.

In the face of the monumental tragedy, grief, and conflict dominating the scene today, what I wish to experience is some comfort, joy, and positive energy. Specifically, Glenn singing "Baby, baby, baby, you got sooooouuuuul." So here is a download of Glenn covering that old Johnny Nash song, 'You Got Soul'.

Good MP3 - 2.6 MB (longish download)
Fast MP3 - 1 MB (much faster download, lower sound quality)

It's taken from a U.S. radio interview Glenn and Chris did while promoting Play, and features Chris and Glenn on guitar. I like to think the Dalai Lama would approve of this song's simple message: You have intrinsic value that can never be lost, and a unique quality that inspires others. Baby, baby, baby.

Glenn on World Cafe

September 23, 2001

Ten people have now entered the CD contest - lucky number 15 could still be YOU!

Scott from Melbourne sent in two more articles, for which I am very grateful. Glenn even talks a little about his ideas for the second solo album and who he might be collaborating with. (Duet, Glenn. You need to do a DUET.)

Beat Magazine
The Herald Sun

Glenn is also on World Cafe this week, an NPR show (National Public Radio). Most U.S. cities have a public radio station, but each local station has it's own schedule, and they don't all get World Cafe, so I can't tell you when it will be on.

If you know what your local NPR station is, you can try calling them to ask when the interview will air, or look for their website by doing a net search. If you don't have any idea what your local station is, check the World Cafe site to see which cities near you air the show. Failing that, try The Corina Method, which is to approach educated-looking baby boomers and ask them about NPR. International listeners may be able to find a station at this page and listen to a netcast. It's a great interview, so I hope you can catch it!

I could hear a pin drop
September 20, 2001

Wow, you are all so quiet! I have only had one entry for the contest, and no one has come forth with stories or pictures from Australia or New Zealand. I figure maybe people are not in the mood for such frivolities given current world events. However, I do still have this extra CD on my hands, so I'm changing the contest to something more simple.

New rules:

Write me an email if you would like the CD. Put "contest" in the subject line. The 15th person to enter will win the CD. (Apologies to the person who did enter and had the rules changed on him! You may try again, of course.)

Scott from Melbourne has sent in an excellent newspaper article from The Age. Also, Art from my guestbook would really appreciate hearing from the person who videotaped Glenn and his friend singing "Whisper to a Scream" after the Detroit gig. You can email him at burkebunch3@netzero.net.

CONTEST: Win the CD!
-and-
New Zealand

September 14, 2001

Glenn will be playing in Auckland tonight, then Wellington on Saturday, and Christchurch on Sunday the 16th. His album is available at online Kiwi stores such as NetCD, Marbeck's Online (and I assume at the Marbeck's shops), and SoundsNZ. I would love to hear whether Australians and New Zealanders are finding it in stores!

My own local search for The Incomplete Glenn Tilbrook, which was planned and executed with near military precision, turned out to be somewhat TOO successful, and I now have an extra copy of the U.S. release. I have decided to give it to someone less fortunate than I - someone who can not get the CD at all.

So, if you are stranded far from where Glenn gigs, or live in some country he is unlikely to visit, or if you just don't have a credit card to order online, write me! Tell me your tale of woe, and from those sad stories I will select the most deserving winner. Please don't worry if your English isn't very good, but write with as much detail as you can so I can truly "feel your pain" (Bill Clinton style). I will mail the CD to the winner no matter where in the world he or she lives.

This is one of those rare moments when the Audio & Video section is actually up to date, with all the media on my site present and accounted for.

The Quixotic site has put up TONS of articles about Glenn, all very well organised so you can easily find the ones you haven't read yet. Go to the Glenn Tilbrook section and choose "reviews". Don't forget to check out the section at the bottom of the list called "More Reviews UK (JPEGS)" - that's where all the ones with pictures are!

Speaking of which…does anyone have pics from the Aussie gigs? Please get in touch!

Aussie and NZ Tour begins!
-and-
Studio 22 video and vidcaps

September 6, 2001

Glenn kicks off his September tour of Australia and New Zealand tonight in Sydney. If you missed him, he's playing tomorrow night too! Check out the Official GT Site or the Quixotic Records site for more tour info. If you've already been to a gig (Americans too!) David at Squeezenet.co.uk is standing by for your gig reports. We fans in the northern hemisphere await your news with bated breath! And of course your photos are welcome here.

Speaking of photos, Roger has outdone himself again with videos and vidcaps! He digitised a delightful couple of clips from Glenn's 1999 appearance on the Australian TV show Studio 22. You can watch him play a very spirited rendition of "Hourglass", then a short interview clip where he speaks movingly about the inspiration for "Some Fantastic Place", immediately followed by the song itself. Get thee to the download page.

"Soooooooooooooooooooooooooooome fantastic place"

As for the vidcaps, there is a real feast of them! Roger did six pages worth. I thought that might be a bit overwhelming for some of you, so I did a sort of "diet version" that has all of the very best ones, hand selected by yours truly, and presented in a reasonable two-page collection. They have all passed the close-up inspection with flying colors, and are suitable for framing. Or follow the example of Karin in my guestbook and use one for your desktop!

Special thanks to Scott of Melbourne for the original videotape.

Australia and NZ album release!
September 2, 2001

Glenn's album has now been released in Australia (as of August 27th) on the Shock Records label. It can, predictably, be found at the Aussie HMV online store, and also at Sanity. Happily, the Australian release contains the bonus acoustic CD. The album is slated for release in New Zealand this week, but I don't know any details about that yet.

There is a nice article about Glenn at the Telstra site.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, GLENN!

New pics and interview

August 31, 2001

Photo by Gary Leeson - CLICK HERE for larger picture

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but I like this one best when supplemented with the story behind it! Gary tells it like this…

During the Toronto show I walked up the side of the stage to get a different view of Glenn in action. Always keeping the stalkers in the corner of his eye, he knew exactly what I was doing, stopped the show, threw himself on the ground and posed as you can see.

He ended up with a great picture! He and Victoria have sent me a fantastic bunch of photos from the Hamilton and Northampton gigs.

I think you will also enjoy this exclusive interview sent to me by Jason of the Boston Globe. It's MUCH more in-depth than any of the ones you'll find elsewhere because Jason simply transcribed the entire interview tape for us. Sometimes it's a little hard to follow because it hasn't been edited, but I found it really fascinating to hear more about his songwriting process, among other things.

Have fun today, everyone! Especially Glenn.

Flock to the stores!

Paul from What Are Records? informs me that The Incomplete Glenn Tilbrook is also being released in Canada today, and is especially likely to be found at HMV. If your local store doesn't have it, ask for it! You can also order it from the W.A.R.? website.

Le premier CD de Glenn Tilbrook, The Incomplete Glenn Tilbrook, est maintenant disponible au Canada! On peut le trouver entre autres chez HMV et Archambault.

U.S. Album Release!
-and-
WICN interview

August 27, 2001

Glenn's solo album, The Incomplete Glenn Tilbrook, will be officially released in U.S. stores tomorrow! It is also available online at Amazon.com, CDnow, Tower Records, and just about every other place I checked. Each store has it's own unique way of being a little fuzzy on the details - some say it was released the 22nd, others have the album listed twice under different titles, etc. I wouldn't worry about those details, though - I'm sure they'll send it to you if you order it. You can also listen to clips of the songs at those sites.

I would love to hear where you are finding the album in your home town! I plan to conduct a thorough investigation in my neck of the woods with many an inquiry. Shop owners will be left with Monty Python clichés on their tongues, their faulty memories conjuring up pictures of me in a crimson cloak with a big red hat.

Nick DiBiasio has very generously sent me his recent WICN interview with Glenn. This marks an historic moment on The Unofficial Site - I have never before had actual permission to post an interview! Not to be outdone, Jason from the Boston Globe quickly followed suit by sending me the site's very first written interview with permission. Apparently he felt cramped by the restricted number of words for his Globe article, so he sent me the whole interview unedited. I will post that as soon as I can.

All this comes just in time for the website's one year birthday, which is roughly now. (The site was not born all in one day, unlike Glenn who was born on August 31st. Cough-cough.)

I don't know whether the CD will be released in Canada, but the Canadian HMV site claims they will be shipping it out starting September 4th. I will let you know if I find out anything more concrete.

WRNR interview
-and-
Thanks, North Americans!

August 22, 2001

Thanks to Helen G, you can now listen to the WRNR interview in full. It's excellent! The DJ asks some unusual questions, and Glenn does 'This Is Where You Ain't' and a slightly modified version of 'Interviewing Randy Newman'.

The North Americans have really done me proud. I wasn't sure how hard it would be to get these interviews, because the U.S. and Canadian radio stations only broadcast in their city of origin rather than across the country like the BBC. In order to get them all I needed volunteers from each individual city.

But you guys were great! All the interviews that aired will be here. I think Glenn missed a few due to illness, and some of the dates I listed were unconfirmed, but Nick DiBiasio's interview will be up soon. The last one is WNST, and I am working on getting a clear copy of that. I am also assured that I will get more pictures. Thanks, everyone!

The U.S. album release is coming right up - August 28th!

KFOG interview
-and-
City in the Park gig

August 16, 2001

Glenn finished up his U.S. tour last night in Northampton, MA, and is flying home today. (Bye Glenn! Come back soon!)

In the wake of the tour, interviews are flooding in, so you will be able to hear more of the radio stuff soon. Steve from San Francisco kindly sent in the KFOG interview, which is up here. (1.4 MB, direct download) It's short, but he does 'Up The Junction' and 'This Is Where You Ain't.'

One of the rumoured U.K. gigs has finally been confirmed at the Quixotic site! It's Nottingham's City in the Park, August 25th, with Bryan Adams headlining. The show has been moved from Wollaton Park to The Embankment this year. For more info, visit their web site. Also, keep an eye on Quixotic for confirmation of other gigs you may have seen advertised.

I am still looking for photographic documentation of Glenn's tour in the U.S.! If you have some, please get in touch.

U.S. press
-and-
WXRV Radio interview

August 14, 2001

Glenn has been in the American press a lot lately! You can check out interviews and reviews at the following sites:

The Valley Advocate
The Boston Herald
The Boston Globe
The New York Daily News

The Valley Advocate and Boston Globe articles are especially good.

Glenn was very late to his interview at WXRV today, but he got there in the end. It's a really good one! Twenty-five minutes long, and Glenn gets to talk a lot. He is interviewed by Bob Stewart, who obviously genuinely appreciates his talent and likes the new album. If you missed it you can download it here. The sound quality is poor, but you can still hear what's being said.

Fan pics and links
-and-
Radio schedule

August 9, 2001

Today I am focusing on the fans! Roo sent me some great pics of a duet she did with Glenn at the San Francisco gig. They did 'Temptation for Love' and brought the house down. Also, Bruce sent me some pics from the Tin Angel (Philadelphia). Some are of Glenn's perfomance and others are from backstage. Enjoy!

Continuing in the 'fan experience' vein, I also found some interesting and unusual websites. One describes bizarre dreams the owner has had about various celebrities, including this one about bumping into Chris and Glenn. (Hint: if you can't read this because of the busy background design, try highlighting all the text with your mouse.) And this site tells a true story about joining Glenn onstage at a solo gig while on leave from the psychiatric ward.

Here are the radio shows again so you don't have to scroll down a mile:

Aug 10 - 5:00pm - Woodstock - WDST
(100.1-102.3 Newburgh/Beacon, 106.3 Poughkeepsie)
Aug 11 - 7:30pm - Worcester - WICN (90.5 FM)
Aug 14 - 3:00pm - Boston - WXRV (92.5 FM)
Aug 15 - 11:00am - Boston - WBUR (90.9 FM)

That last one is on a show called The Connection, which is nationally syndicated on NPR (National Public Radio). Click here to see if and when it will be broadcast in your area.

The Squeeze Story
-and-
Long-awaited news from Ireland

August 6, 2001

Janice Long presented an excellent documentary about Squeeze on BBC Radio 2 this weekend called 'Labelled With Love - The Squeeze Story'. It's an entertaining and in-depth look at the band's history, featuring interview clips from Glenn, Chris Difford, Jools Holland, and others. Five stars from me! If you missed it you can download it here.

Remember The Lost Irish Gigs of June? There were no photos, no gig reports (except for one in my guestbook! Thanks, Karen)…it was as if Glenn had disappeared into the Bermuda Triangle. Well, a gig report has finally surfaced on Squeezenet! Here is an excerpt:

Glenn was obviously enjoying himself, brimming with confidence, relating the Cliff Richard/Summer Holiday stories and captivating the whole audience for the entire evening. Then - walkabout time, Glenn and his guitar singing (and winking), posing for photos - at one stage even lying on his belly hands on chin so the chap at the front could get plenty of snaps.

I wonder where THOSE pics are. David at Squeezenet is all set up to take your U.S. and Aussie tour reviews, too. Just send them to him.

Glenn has been in the press a lot (yay!) and some of it can be found online. The San Francisco Art Magazine did a review of his album and his SF gig. Also, Lily reports that The Washington Post did a nice review of his Arlington (Virginia) show, and they had him chatting live on their website. You can still read the text from the chat.

If you have some great (or even pretty good) pics from the U.S. tour I would love to put them up! Send them to me.

Hoboken tour date added
-and-
Oops! radio mistake

August 1, 2001

Glenn has added one last date to his North American tour: Hoboken, New Jersey on August 10th. For details please see the Quixotic site.

There are rumours that he will be touring again in both the U.S. and the U.K. later this year. Both are probably true, BUT none of the dates have been confirmed yet. If you see tickets for sale at a venue near you, check the Quixotic site to see if that show has been announced yet. If it hasn't, then the gig may not take place. It's up to you whether or not you want to buy tickets under those circumstances, but please realise it's a "maybe" even if you have the paper tickets right in your hot little hand.

I made a mistake on the last radio date I have up for Glenn (scroll down this page to see them all). I had the station name and the link wrong, but they are fixed now. It will be netcast with both Media Player and Real Audio.

Glenn had to cancel a lot of recent interviews because he had a bad flu and was saving his energy for the gigs, so if you tried to tune in and had no luck, don't give up! I think he will make it to the rest.

The Annapolis WRNR interview on August 3rd should be really good - one hour! Sadly, it 's not being netcast. If you can tape it, please email me!

Gorgeous pics
-and-
Radio and magazines

July 29, 2001

Susan from the U.K. sent in some new pics from the Coin Street Festival in London. Very nice!

Glenn's U.S. tour rages on, and he will be on some NPR shows (National Public Radio) like Acoustic Cafe, World Cafe, and possibly The Connection. They won't air for a while, but Americans might want to check local public radio stations to see if those shows air locally for you. If not, they will be webcast anyway, and I will put up the details closer to the time. For now, keep an eye on the list of shows in the update below this one! I added one at the bottom.

Of special interest is Nick DiBiasio's show on August 11th. He is a huge Glenn and Squeeze fan, and he will be doing a Saturday show of all Glenn and Squeeze songs! The show will run from 7-11pm Eastern, with Glenn scheduled to call at 7:30.

Glenn has a two-page interview in Record Collector Magazine this month, and is also featured in the July/August issue of Performing Songwriter.

Radio interviews
July 25, 2001

Here are some more radio dates. I am including the ones I already announced so you will only have to look in one place to keep track. All times are Eastern Daylight Time, and the ones with links are netcast.

Aug 3 - 10:30am - Baltimore - WNST (1570 AM)

Summer Sundae pics
-and-
puzzling footwear

July 22, 2001

Joanne sent in some very nice photos from the Summer Sundae Festival in Leicester. The stage lighting is really pretty! Also, the House of Blues site did a little feature on Glenn, and so did the Denver Post (scroll down past Aerosmith).

I'm happy to report that Glenn seems to be branching out again on the fashion front. One attendee of the Coin Street Festival last weekend wrote:

The only question we were asking each other was WHAT WAS HE WEARING ON HIS FEET? Some very strange spongy yellow things, don't even know what you'd call them!

Although he seems to reserve the more unusual clothing items for festivals, I am holding on to a thin thread of hope that he brought these babies with him to the States!

In an effort to make sure everything goes smoothly with the field staff, I am keeping a contact list of all the members. If you signed up, please send me an email. Thanks!

Radio interviews
-and-
Field staff update

July 20, 2001

Glenn has some radio interviews coming up in America! (Are you ready Boy and Girl Scouts?) Some are listed below, and more will be announced soon. The ones being webcast have a link to the station's site. For most of them you'll need to use Windows Media Player, which you can download free. To find out what time these shows are netcast in your area just visit the world clock.

July 23 - 11:00am - San Francisco - KI0I (101.3 FM)
July 25 - 8:00am - San Francisco - KFOG (104.5 FM)
Aug 3 - 10:30am - Baltimore - WNST (1570 AM)
Aug 3 - 3:00pm - Annapolis - WRNR (103.1 FM)

Glenn will also be on The Ultimate 80's Show, which is syndicated and airs on 30 radio stations around the country. The air date hasn't been set yet, but it might be next weekend (July 28 and 29). I couldn't find any references to this show on the web. Is anyone familiar with it? Please let me know!

If you joined the field staff but you have not had an email response yet, don't worry! Deb is stuffing envelopes as fast as she can and has probably already mailed out your supplies, but she was a little behind on emailing last time I checked. If you get your stuff and don't know what to do with it, don't forget you can refer to her welcome letter here on the site. Also, if you want to hang more than 15 posters please email Deb and let her know - she sends everyone fifteen unless they specify otherwise.

We still need more field staffers! Join us in our mission to Glennify the continent!

New section: field staff!
July 17, 2001

I got so excited about the field staff idea that I made a whole new section for it! It tells you the history of my involvement with it (five days so far), and everything you need to know to join. It also includes the current welcome letter from the field staff goddess, Deb. If you only do ONE thing for Glenn's field staff we will both love you forever, but Deb lists roughly 740 ideas to get you started.

Glenn hits North America!!!
-and-
Help promote Glenn

July 16, 2001

Glenn's North American tour starts this week! He will be kicking off at the Soiled Dove in Denver this Friday, and from there will head to the west coast for gigs in LA, Anaheim, and San Francisco. Then he's off to the Midwest (Milwaukee, Sauget, Chicago, Detroit), dipping up into Canada for gigs in Hamilton and Toronto, and then on to the east coast! For specific tour info see the Quixotic site .

Americans, I am counting on you for photos and any interviews Glenn might do! Like Boy Scouts you must BE PREPARED with cameras, film, and blank tapes handy by the radio. The Brits have been so incredibly generous sharing with us, how can we possibly let them down?

Always help others.

W.A.R.? (Glenn's U.S. record label) is forming a team of volunteers to help promote Glenn's music! If you would like to be part of this elite force, please contact Deb or fill out the form at the W.A.R.? web site. She'll send you posters and flyers to post around town, leave in coffee houses, etc.

The U.S. release of The Incomplete Glenn Tilbrook is now being sold at the W.A.R.? web site.

Does one of your local radio stations have a long-standing love affair with Squeeze? Please email Jillian from W.A.R.? and tell her the name of the station and the city. Make your message brief, but don't forget to mention it's for Glenn Tilbrook promotion!

Uncut Magazine interview
July 11, 2001

I have put up the interview with Glenn from this month's issue of Uncut Magazine. BUT it turns out Uncut is available here in the States! My anonymous Chicago friend writes:

I found out yesterday that the mag you keep talking about with the Beatles stuff in it (with a Glenn quote in the article) is available in the United States!!! I had been quietly coveting yours, enviously wishing I had a copy. But I thought yours was sent from a friend overseas, so I didn't think I could find one here. But they're all over!!!

Hmm…I really must get out more often.

Compilation CD
-and-
Solo album and tour news

July 6, 2001

Glenn has contributed his recipe song 'Sunday Breakfast Treat' to a compilation CD called Melting Pot (get it?). The CD is being put together by Middle Park Community Harmony Group, which is an organisation that seeks to promote racial unity in South East London. I don't know much about SE London, but the group is based in Eltham where Glenn went to school. If you'd like to order the CD, call 020 8850 2638.

You can now order t-shirts and tour posters at the Quixotic site! Just go to their CD Order section. The shirts are really nice 100% cotton in two styles. Quixotic has changed the way they calculate the shipping charges, but with my notorious (lack of) math skills I have no idea how it changes things! The Currency Calculator will help you figure out the exchange rates, though.

The bonus tracks on the U.S. release of The Incomplete Glenn Tilbrook will be…

One Dark Moment (acoustic version)
This Is Where You Ain't ('now that's what I call now mate' version)
Sunday Breakfast Treat

It's not due out in stores until August 28th, but will be available at Glenn's U.S. gigs, which start in Denver on July 20th. (!!!) Tour dates are still being added for the U.S., but I'm afraid the schedule for Australia and New Zealand is set. I keep hoping he'll do a couple of shows in CANADA, but I don't know how likely that is.

Canada, Glenn. CanadaCanadaCanadaCanada!
