Glenn is "Best Concert of 2001"
-and-
Video: The Cutting Edge

December 27, 2001

The Washington Post has named Glenn's Iota gig as the year's best concert in their "Best of 2001" feature! You can read it for yourself at their site. The Washington Post is one of the most popular papers in the States, with a daily circulation of 802, 594.

Scott Rodas sent me a videotaped episode of The Cutting Edge (I.R.S. Records' now-defunct MTV show) that stars Glenn, Chris Difford, and Jools Holland. Circa 1985 (?). It's by far the most entertaining Squeeze TV appearance I've seen! Patrick slaved over the digitising during Christmas break, carefully snipping out all of the non-Squeeze footage, then pasting clips together for the easiest possible download. Nothing has been omitted, except a song Jools did on piano by himself. (Sorry, Jools!). It is FABULOUS, and very funny. More details at the download page! There are also vidcaps.

Radio 2 Tribute
-and-
Live 'Temptation For Love' mp3

December 23, 2001

Radio 2 aired a one-hour tribute to Glenn and Chris' songwriting yesterday, entitled 'Some Fantastic Place'. If you missed it, you can get a RealMedia file of it right now. It's a 7.3 MB direct download, provided courtesy of Roger.

SnappyRoo has devoted a section of her website to the two Glenn gigs she attended in San Francisco this year. During the first one she got up on stage with Glenn and did a beautiful duet of 'Temptation For Love', which you can download from her site. She has some pics up, and there are some others in my photo section (not new, but perhaps of renewed interest!)

Coming soon: Squeeze video from 'Glenn of Nazareth' era

Happy holidays, everyone!

A Question of Pop
December 16, 2001

Last May Glenn showed up on the U.K. TV game show, A Question of Pop. The Glenniest segments are now available for download in Real Media video clips. Roger made those for us, along with a couple of really nice pages of vidcaps.

Fabulous hair (pre-'prisoner exchange')

'Some Fantastic Place', the upcoming Radio 2 documentary about Chris and Glenn's songwriting, now has it's own descriptive page on the BBC site. (It's not my fault they can't spell Carrack.)

The Glenn mailing list recently completed it's poll for the best song on The Incomplete Glenn Tilbrook. 'This Is Where You Ain't' came in first, followed by 'Observatory', and a three way tie between 'Cash Machine', 'Other World', and 'G.S.O.H. Essential'. Interestingly, 'Parallel World' got no votes!

Squeeze on Radio 2
-and-
Echo.com

December 11, 2001

Glenn had his first show of the U.K. mini tour on Sunday in Beverley, and apparently it was a real barnstormer! It was packed to capacity, standing room only, which is nice to hear after a few rumours drifting in about ill-attended U.S. gigs. He has not given up on the States yet, though, and may even be back touring as early as January.

BBC Radio 2 is doing a show about Squeeze, which will air December 22 at 8 pm. The hour-long tribute will be hosted by actor Christopher Eccleston, and it contains interviews with both Chris and Glenn. Radio 2 is netcast.

Some friends of mine turned me on to a great music site called Echo.com. The idea is that you can create an internet radio station tailored specifically to your taste in music. Since I have very eclectic musical taste, and I am really picky, it has been a godsend for me! Echo quizzes you about what types of music you like, and then you can add specific artists to your playlist. The resulting personalised radio station plays things on your list as well as music they consider to be related to the artists you chose. Your friends can also listen in while you are online.

Unfortunately, they do not have Glenn's album encoded at Echo yet. It would be great exposure for him, because of the "related artist" feature - they would play his music to potential new fans! Why not drop them an email and request they add Glenn's album? Direct it to:

music@echo.com

The Santa hat Glenn picture on the front page of this site was created by David Golden. Ho ho ho!

U.K. Mini Tour
-and-
What's Diffy Doing?

December 7, 2001

Glenn completed his U.S. tour on Sunday, but next week he will be back on the road again in the U.K. He'll be playing in Beverley on Sunday Dec 9th, then on to Leeds, Wolverhampton, Derby, Ashton-Under-Lyne, Liverpool, Crewe, Cardiff, and Southampton. For details please see the schedule at Quixotic. The Leeds date is new!

Chris Difford has been recording his own solo album, and last week he launched a new site at chrisdifford.com. Also, Victoria has started a new fan mailing list called DiffWorld (click to join up!)

There is a new book out that features interviews with Glenn, Aimee Mann, Neil Finn, Nick Lowe, and lots of other great songwriters of various genres. The title is Behind the Muse: Pop and Rock's Greatest Songwriters Talk About Their Work and Inspiration. You can buy the book or find out more about it at the publisher's website, Tiny Ripple. It's also sold at Barnes & Noble, but they charge a little more. The author is Bill DeMain, a music journalist and one half of the pop duo Swan Dive.

Peter Young sent me this link to some nice pics he took at Glenn's Coach house gig in San Juan Capistrano!

New pics!
November 26, 2001

Some great new pics have been sent in from the U.S. tour, including Glenn's fundraising gig at the Ocean County Library in New Jersey, the Rochester show (two pages!), and the Greenville gig.

The Solana Beach gig is Wednesday, and I found a great radio station in that area for requests! Just click on their email addy below or call them up and ask them to play a Glenn song.

ilisten@sets102.com
Tel: (858) 450-1021

You can also visit their web site, although they don't stream: KXST SETS 102.1 FM I am still looking for LA area stations - can't find any that look promising. Suggestions?

If you happened to catch Glenn today on KBAC please email me.

Texas, California, and in between
-and-
NEW Radio station request list!
-plus-
Santa Fe radio interview

November 22, 2001

Glenn is still touring the U.S. by RV! This week he is in Texas, and then he'll wind his way to California, stopping to gig in Santa Fe NM and Tempe AZ. In California he'll play at Solana Beach, San Juan Capistrano, LA, and San Francisco. For details, see the Quixotic site.

Michelle has sent in an EXCELLENT list of radio station request lines. These stations are known to play the occasional Glenn or Squeeze song, and many have also interviewed our hero. Right now would be the best of all possible times for us to call stations in the cities listed above and request a song from the new album! That should help ensure that his shows are well populated, especially if we mention the upcoming gig(s) local to the station. Unfortunately the stations list doesn't have stations yet for most of those cities, so please let me know if you have one to add!

This tour had been pretty quiet as far as radio appearances. I suspect it's because Glenn spends all of his spare time driving the RV and voguing for the documentary film crew that is following his every move. Yes, they are making a documentary about Glenn! But I suspect it will be a long time before there is any news about if/where it will be aired. He does have one radio interview coming up on KBAC 98.1 in Santa Fe, NM on the 26th, sometime around 5:00ish. Unfortunately, it's not netcast, so I hope someone will be able to tape it!

There have been some good reviews of Glenn's gigs online. Jason (famous for sending in the uncut Boston Globe interview) has apparently been moonlighting at PopMatters.com. He did a really good review of the Cambridge gig, which also has some nice photos. The Atlanta gig (very odd one!) is reviewed at Access Atlanta.

CDBaby is an independent online music store that is featuring Glenn on their front page over the next three days. It looks like kind of a neat little Indie store to browse in!

Radio Wales interview
November 19, 2001

Glenn's Radio Wales interview is finally here! This is a really excellent one - more of an event than an interview, because it was recorded with a live audience and it lasts nearly two hours. Glenn answers tons of interesting questions, giving nonstandard responses, and he sings at least 13 songs! Too much to talk about here - check it out on the download page. Unfortunately, for most people the download will be something of an event in itself, since it's so long, but I have split it into sections to make things easier.

We are having a good old time on the new Glenn list. People are writing in with introductions, and there is a poll for favorite track from The Incomplete Glenn Tilbrook. Come join us!

Happy Thanksgiving, Americans!

New Glenn List!
-and-
The Extracurricular GT

November 15, 2001

Michelle and I have started a new email list for discussion of all things Glenn! It's called the Glenn List, and you can sign up by clicking here. If you have any problems doing so, please direct your questions and concerns to Michelle. She is the head honcho list owner, whereas my role is more that of a trusty sidekick.

Kenn and Chris from Canada have completed a heartbreaking work of staggering genius they like to call "The Extracurricular Glenn Tilbrook". It's a list of projects Glenn has contributed to outside of Squeeze and his solo work. It's quite possibly incomplete, so feel free to send in additions!

I am awaiting photos of Glenn (self-described as "caring, sharing, and lovely" in this recent article) to put up here on this very website. Don't be shy; step right up and send your pics to me.

Alan Thompson's Glenn interview was fantastic, fantastic, fantastic! It will be here soon, I promise. In the meantime, try downloading that Parallel World mp3 again.

Project mp3 Download
(special assignment)
-and-
Radio Wales

November 10, 2001

The Rolling Stone site has a free mp3 of 'Parallel World' available for download! It's the full song, same as on the album. The best part is, the site keeps track of the number of downloads, and moves the song up or down their chart accordingly. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to download it as many times as you can! You can also rate the song with stars, and/or write a review at the download page.

The other cool thing about this is that you can tell your friends about it, and they have a 100% above board way to sample Glenn's music. The more friends download it the better for Glenn! If they like that one, there is a free mp3 of 'This is Where You Ain't (Live)' at the W.A.R.? site for dessert.

Alan Thompson's Saturday Social with Glenn is airing at 7:30 pm (U.K. time) tonight on Radio Wales. That's 2:30 pm Eastern and 11:30 am Pacific in the U.S.

Incomplete WFUV interview
November 9, 2001

Glenn's interview with Darren DeVivo on WFUV was excellent! The only thing incomplete about it is that it's missing a rather large chunk at the beginning. I may get the whole thing later (especially if you send me a tape), but for right now you can still listen to a good half hour of Glenn chat. The download is kind of large because of the length. I cut out 'Interviewing Randy' to make it slightly smaller, but Glenn does sing 'One Dark Moment' and a very nice 'Tempted' that I couldn't bear to snip. Direct download (4.7 MB). Enjoy!

Glenn's November 15th Schenectady gig has been cancelled and replaced with one in Boston. For details, visit Quixotic.

Radio interview Thursday
November 5, 2001

Glenn has an interview on WFUV radio (90.7 FM) in NYC this Thursday at noon. It will be netcast through WFUV's site. To find the time in your time zone, check out the world clock (NY is on Eastern Standard Time).

Rarebit Demo pics
-and-
Alan Thompson interview

November 3, 2001

Angela attended Glenn's recent Rarebit cooking demo in Grand Central Station. She reports:

Yes, Glenn did actually cook! Well, he did some of it. He got to crack the eggs and to pour in several other things (hot mustard, Worcestershire sauce - which he berated Americans for mispronouncing, beer, cheese). I have some nice photos of him waving toast around and lying on the counter in front of the mixing bowl. Then he played while Nicky Perry from Tea & Sympathy did the rest of the cooking.

Glenn also advised that we add an egg to our rarebit if following the recipe in the lyrics to 'Sunday Breakfast Treat'. Angela sent me her gorgeous photos for the site.

Alan Thompson, who did a great interview on Radio Wales last November is at it again! He teased two hours of chat and song from Glenn in front of a live studio audience this week. The show will air on the evening of November 10th and will be netcast from the Radio Wales site.

I don't think the questions Alan asked could have been much more probing than those posed by fans afterwards. The Underwear Question has stumped some of the finest minds on three continents, but Glenn freed up the think tank for other concerns (global warming, perhaps?) by giving a definitive answer on Wednesday: Boxers it is!

If you live in or near Toms River, NJ, be sure to catch Glenn's show at the Ocean County Library on November 10th at 2pm. It's a fundraiser for the library, and tickets are $10. For more info, call (732) 349-6200.

Glenn's US tour starts on Tuesday (November 6th) in Arlington, VA. New dates have been added twice since I last updated, including some in New York state, Texas, Santa Fe, Tempe, and California. Check out the schedule at the Quixotic site!

World Cafe
-and-
Busking in NY

October 27, 2001

As promised, Glenn busked in the NY subway last week to raise money for the Sept. 11th fund. Here's proof:

(Photo by Dan Rivkin, expert busking witness)

Dan took more pics, and may be sending some in once they're developed. Does anyone have pics of the rarebit demonstration? I have had several requests from people wishing to see Glenn "in his pinny" (apron).

For those of you who missed the World Cafe interview on NPR, Pat has graciously sent it in. It's a great one with interesting questions, and he does four songs, all of which I left in. It was taped last time Glenn was in the U.S., and he's coming back to America for the month of November. Tour dates are still being added, so keep a sharp eye on Quixotic, especially if you live in NY state or California. There are still no dates in the Pacific Northwest - a travesty of justice!

The 'Imagine' single is running a little late and won't actually be released at the end of October as originally planned. The delay has nothing to do with Glenn - he sent in his part already, but W.A.R.? are waiting for some of the other artists' tracks before they can mix it. (If you have no idea what I'm talking about but are intrigued, scroll down several updates to October 3rd.)

You can read a very good article describing Glenn's subterranean NY performances at the ProSound News site. Or read an account of the rarebit demonstration at The New York Observer Online (scroll down past "Old Lion Roars Again" to find "Tempted By Rarebit"). There is also an excellent gig review from Australia at the Sydney Morning Herald site. I admire the way the writer starts off by listing all the reasons Glenn won't make it as a hand model!

This week Glenn will be playing: in Oxford on Sunday the 28th, Chester on Tuesday, Sheffield on Thursday, Leicester on Friday, and Widnes on Saturday. Details at the Quixotic site or the Official GT Site.

Dr Pepper commercial
-and-
Sweet Smell of Excess (again)

October 20, 2001

The Dr Pepper commercial Glenn and Chris did in the mid-eighties as Difford & Tilbrook has finally surfaced! Scott Rodas sent in a fantastic mp3 of it. (1 MB direct download) As unappetising as Dr Pepper may be, the commercial is really fun! I have been listening to it every morning as part of my mental health regime.

Speaking of fun, Glenn seems to have plenty of it over the years. Yesterday he was talking some more about books and sex on the Radio 2 documentary 'The Sweet Smell of Excess'. The documentary is ongoing, so more quotes from him might be forthcoming. It airs Thursday nights, and there are three more weeks of it to go. Glenn's comments were in two different parts, so here are part one and part two.

Helen sent me this great link to a review of Glenn's recent Northampton show from the Daily Hampshire Gazette. It's in-depth, very well written, and the writer seems quite impressed with Glenn.

Glenn in NYC this week!
October 15, 2001

Glenn will be busking at Grand Central Station this Thursday (Oct. 18th) at the following times and locations:

8am - 9am Main Hall
12:15pm - 1:15pm Food Court
5pm - 6pm Main Hall

On Friday he'll be doing a Welsh Rarebit cooking demonstration from 12:30 to 1:30pm in Grand Central Station at Vanderbilt Hall (first hall off the 42nd Street entrance). He'll be in the kitchen with the owner of the NYC restaurant, Tea and Sympathy.

NYC is in the midst of a huge, two-week celebration of British culture that was originally to be called "UK in NY". It had been in the planning stages for the past three years, and was almost canceled after the attacks, but they decided to go on with it, renaming it UK with NY and refocusing slightly to emphasize solidarity between NY and the UK.

Field Staff: Oops! If you are in the field staff and you hung posters last time, you DO still need to contact Deb if you want to do it again. (I mistakenly said not to in my last update.) Just give her your mailing address and let her know which gig you will be advertising. deb@war.com Thanks!

Glenn to tour U.S.!
-and-
Grassroots album promotion

October 9, 2001

New dates for Glenn gigs have been announced at Quixotic. The December U.K. ones have been reinstated, and he has some up for the U.S. now too! More will be added later.

Right now would be an EXCELLENT time to sign up for the field staff, since we have a couple of weeks before he gets here. If you signed up last time but never received any materials, it may be that you are not in the database for some (accidental) reason. You can correct this by emailing Deb: deb@war.com. Give her your full name, mailing address and email address, and be sure to mention it's for Tilbrook field staff! If you received materials last time you don't need to sign up again.

For those not interested in postering and/or living outside of N. America, there is still a lot you can do to help promote Glenn's album! Read all about it at my new tell-all page of how YOU can send Glenn's album soaring to the top of the charts.

To help motivate you further, here is a video of a Top of The Pops 2 appearance from 1981. It's Squeeze doing 'Is That Love' (direct download, 3.9 MB). If you can't watch that, you will have to try to console yourself with this Rock City interview.

Radio 2 Interview snippet
-and-
"Five guitar" review

October 4, 2001

Glenn briefly described his pre-Squeeze jobs for us today on Radio 2. It was during the first installment of a six-part documentary series about the rock lifestyle, 'The Sweet Smell of Excess'. Apparently Glenn didn't bother waiting for rock stardom before indulging in excesses like reading all day, not to mention watching the women customers undressing in the Indian store where he worked. "It used to be quite good," he says, and I believe him. Since it's only a minute long, you can download directly (164k). It was Gill who provided us with this sound file, and it must be said that she got Glenn up in record time. Thanks, Gill!

I ran across a review of The Incomplete Glenn Tilbrook today in a magazine called Up The Junction. (!) This reviewer had a very interesting take on Squeeze's career, lauding Frank as their last great album before Glenn went solo! It's not that I don't like Frank, you understand, it's just that I've always thought it was largely overlooked, and now according to this review, it was Glenn's last creative peak. However, it's an interesting read, and he gives Glenn a well-deserved five guitar rating.

U.K. Tour
-and-
'Imagine' Project

October 3, 2001

British fans will be very pleased to hear that Glenn's long-rumoured autumn tour has now been announced at the Quixotic site, and lots of dates are up. He had also hoped to return to the States in November, but I don't know if that's still on. There is a gap in his tour schedule for most of November, so fingers crossed!

Glenn is participating in a fundraising project for orphans of the September 11th tragedy. He will lend his voice to an international group of musicians who are recording a cover of John Lennon's song, 'Imagine'. The CD single, slated for release at the end of October, will be available at the W.A.R.? website and in stores. W.A.R.? is the North American distributor of Glenn's album, and the 'Imagine' single is their project. You can read more about it at the following websites:
